CHAPTER 7

Adam took his time, giving Jackson a chance to recover.

Dressing silently in the darkened room, he slipped out, wincing at the noontime brilliance of sun off the water before making a beeline for the dining room and some badly needed food.

"My, my, don't we look...rested." The smoky strains of Letty's voice came from behind him. It figured he would run into her now.

"Good morning, Letty." He turned to greet her, keeping his face stern. "I see you didn't need any beauty sleep. You look as lovely as ever this morning."

"If you're resorting to flattery, things must be serious."

Speaking of serious... "I wanted to apologize for last night.

What I said was uncalled for."

"Oh, he is having a good influence on you. Where is the charming Mr. Talbot, anyway? I was certain he had no plans to leave your side."

Adam guided her to the buffet, taking two plates and handing her a third. "He's sleeping." When she reached for her plate, he used it to draw her close enough to whisper, "In my bed."

"I'm glad to see you've come to your senses." She shook her head as he began piling the two plates up with steaming food from the enormous silver tureens lining the table. "And recovered your appetite."

"I'll admit, I've missed wanting to eat."

"Don't wear yourself out too much," she said coyly. "I wouldn't want you passing out at the table from exhaustion."

"No chance of that. I'm more energized than I've ever been in my whole life."

"Seems Jackson's little white lie is paying off."

He stopped, a ladle of potatoes suspended over his plate.

"What lie?"

"He didn't tell you?" She bit her lip. "He won the two hundred he needed the night before the game started. So he didn't need to borrow it from you after all."

"Isn't that interesting." Adam couldn't decide how he felt about the information.

"Adam, I'm sure he didn't— "

"No, it's fine." He dropped the half-full plates back on the table and headed for the door.

"Adam, don't do anything stupid!"

Too late. He already had.

Jackson, sprawled out and snoring softly, didn't even twitch when Adam reentered the room. The open vulnerability of the sleeping man would have made him smile a few minutes ago. Now it made Adam angrier.

He snatched open the curtains, letting in the brilliant daylight to make Jackson wince and retreat. Before he could pull a pillow over his head to block out the light, Adam grabbed Jackson's pants and threw them at him. "Game's over. Get out."

Jackson stared at him, brow knit with confusion.

To further drive his point home, Adam caught Jackson by the upper arm and hauled him out of the bed.
